Perfumes I Tried This Week: 5 Fragrance Samples Ranked (Best to Worst)

Perfumes I Tried This Week: 5 Fragrance Samples Ranked (Best to Worst)

If you shop online at Ulta and Sephora as much as I do, you know how easy it is to accumulate fragrance samples. Between promotions, free gifts with purchase, and sample bundles, I somehow ended up with an entire box full of perfume samples that I had never actually tried.

Instead of letting them sit there, I decided to turn it into a weekly experiment. Each week I'll be testing a handful of perfume samples to see which ones are actually worth wearing in real life. I tend to gravitate toward vanilla fragrances and lighter scents that feel warm without being overpowering, so that definitely influences my rankings.

This week I tested five perfumes and ranked them from best to worst based on scent, wearability, and my overall impression after wearing them throughout the week.

My husband also got involved and shared his thoughts on a few of the fragrances, which added another fun perspective. I even have several men's fragrance samples waiting in my collection, so I'll be having him test those in future reviews as well.

Quick Ranking

Ariana Grande Cloud

Mugler Angel

Valentino Donna Born in Roma

Beautiful Magnolia by Estée Lauder

Ariana Grande Cloud

What it smells like
Cloud is a creamy vanilla fragrance with soft musk and a hint of coconut sweetness. It manages to feel warm and cozy while still staying light enough to wear throughout the day.

Key notes
Lavender, pear, bergamot, whipped cream, coconut, praline, vanilla orchid, musk, and woods.

My thoughts
This was easily my favorite of the week. I naturally gravitate toward vanilla scents, and this one hits that sweet spot without feeling overly sugary. It has a soft, comforting scent that feels both cozy and clean at the same time. Out of everything I tested this week, this is the one I kept reaching for the most and the one I'd most likely purchase in a full size bottle.

Fun fact
Many fragrance lovers say Cloud smells similar to the luxury fragrance Baccarat Rouge 540, which is one reason it became so popular as a more affordable alternative.

Mugler Angel

What it smells like
Angel is a bold gourmand fragrance filled with dessert-like notes balanced by earthy patchouli. It's richer and more dramatic than many modern perfumes.

Key notes
Bergamot, red berries, honey, praline, caramel, chocolate, vanilla, patchouli, tonka bean, and amber.

My thoughts
Angel is definitely stronger than the other perfumes I tested this week, but I still really enjoyed it. The sweet notes make it feel indulgent and unique, especially if you enjoy dessert-inspired fragrances. It's not a subtle scent, but it's memorable and lasts for hours.

Fun fact
When Angel launched in 1992, it completely changed the fragrance industry by introducing gourmand notes like chocolate, caramel, and praline into fine perfume.

Love by Vera Wang

Shop at Ulta

What it smells like
This fragrance leans more floral but has a warm vanilla base that keeps it from feeling too sharp.

Key notes
Mandarin, pink pepper, blackcurrant, jasmine sambac, tuberose, queen of the night flower, vanilla, and ambrox.

My thoughts
This one surprised me a little. It's softer and more romantic than the other fragrances on the list. While it isn't as sweet as my top two picks, it's still very wearable and elegant. My husband actually liked this one the most out of the five I tried this week, which made it stand out in a different way.

Fun fact
This perfume includes queen of the night flower, a rare cactus bloom that only opens after sunset.

Valentino Donna Born in Roma

Shop on Amazon

What it smells like
Born in Roma blends floral jasmine with warm vanilla and subtle woody notes.

Key notes
Jasmine sambac, cashmeran, and bourbon vanilla.

My thoughts
This one was nice, but it didn't stand out as much as the top three fragrances for me. The scent is balanced and pleasant, but it didn't have the same light vanilla profile that I tend to enjoy most.

Fun fact
The signature studded bottle design is inspired by Roman architecture and mirrors the same design used on Valentino handbags and shoes.

Beautiful Magnolia by Estée Lauder

Shop on Amazon

What it smells like
Beautiful Magnolia is a traditional floral fragrance centered around magnolia petals with soft woods and musk in the base.

Key notes
Magnolia petals, water lotus, maté, gardenia, rose, cedarwood, sandalwood, and musk.

My thoughts
This one simply wasn't for me. It has a very classic floral scent that reminds me of traditional department store perfumes. If you enjoy elegant floral fragrances you might love it, but personally it felt a little too mature for my taste.

Fun fact
Magnolia flowers actually have very little natural scent, so perfumers often recreate the smell by blending several different floral notes together.

Final Thoughts

After wearing all five perfumes throughout the week, the sweeter and warmer scents stood out the most for me. Ariana Grande Cloud was the clear favorite thanks to its soft vanilla profile, while Mugler Angel impressed me with its bold gourmand scent and long-lasting wear.

Testing fragrance samples this way has been a fun way to discover perfumes I might not have picked up otherwise, and it's also helping me narrow down which ones are worth buying in full size bottles.
